Scientists test technologies for radioactive waste disposal
22. 11. 2022
How to safely store spent nuclear fuel is being investigated by a team of scientists at the Josef Tunnel. Instead of spent fuel, the scientists used a heater in the experiment. It simulated the high temperature the fuel will still have after storage. Not only the rock and the storage container, but also a layer of bentonite around it protects against radioactivity leakage.
The experiment is ten years old and scientists are now looking at what changes have occurred in the properties of the container after years of testing.
Environmental microbiologist Martin Pusztai from CXI is also involved in the experiment.
