Project:

Metody in situ ochrany sladkovodních biotopů s využitím sinic a řas jako indikačních druhů

Realization period:01.01. 2022 – 30.04. 2024

Leader at TUL:Mgr. Martin Pusztai, Ph.D.

Cyanobacteria and Algae are vastly diverse groups of organisms, which both have a huge adaptability and therefore ability to colonise virtually any biotope. Similarly to other protists they have a great potential in biomonitoring. That is mostly because many species are very sensitive to various environmental conditions. Moreover their reaction to changes of these conditions is very fast, because their generation turnover is signifficantly faster in comparison with other plant or animal communities. That is why they are ideal organisms to indicate ecological state of a habitat. However they are not commonly used in the Czech republic except for running waters‘ biomonitoring using Diatom communities (included in Water Framework Directive 2000/60/ES). One of the reasons is, that, unlike most of Europian states, the Czech republic lacks Red list of Cyanobacteria and Algae as a platform for subsequent actions of organs active in environmental protection. Developing such list is the primary outcome of the proposed project The first step to reach this goal is completion of (1) a relevant list of all species (check-list) known fom the Czech republic, which will be used as a base material for completion of (2) Red list of Cyanobacteria and Algae. An intesive excerption of published works about canobacterial and algal flora of our country will be a foundation for developing the list of Cyanobacteria and Algae known from the Czech republic. Acquired data will be accompanied by own intensive floristic and ecolological research of selected localities across the Czech republic. Acquired floristic and environmental data will be subsequently used for testing the methodics for selection of those cyanobacterial and algal species, which can be thereatend because of their habitat’s endangerment. With these conclusions (3) methodics for usage of these data will be estableshed. Environmental protection agencies of all levels, experts as well as the general public are the target groups of the project.
