Technology and industry, fundamental sciences and society are drivers within the today heterogeneous landscape of particle science. Regardless of the particle's conditions of presence, e.g. as an obstacle for powder flow in industry, as a promising newly created functional product or as a dangerous pollutant, particle system characterization is crucial for the progress of any of the existing drivers. The second half of the previous century provided fundamental knowledge on particle systems leading to well established disciplines such as particle sizing, aerosol science, cristallization, agglomeration, environmental particle science, etc.,the first half of our century is deepening the gap between the many fields of particle system expertise, which are today almost disconnected. The European Platform on Particle System Characterization tackles this challenge by creating a sustainable network of particle users, experts in particle system characterization, educators and stakeholders from society.
