Project:
AI-supported design of 3D-printed spine implants (cage) with integrated shape memory fixation
Realization period:01.03. 2024 – 28.02. 2027
Leader at TUL:Ing. Jan Kočí
Degenerative changes in the spine become symptomatic with age. These changes can lead to a loss of function of the intervertebral discs, making a surgical intervention necessary. In the context of surgical therapy, the removal of the intervertebral disc and replacement with an artificial prosthesis (cage) is a standardized procedure. A considerable drawback of current procedures is that when a cage is implanted, part of the healthy bone structure of the spine has to be removed in order to fit the prosthesis, which cannot be modified intraoperatively. In addition, typical provision times are 3 - 4 weeks.
These deficits are to be eliminated in the proposed project based on extensive preparatory work by the partners. The main goal is to develop a methodology for fabrication of patient-specific cages by use of additive manufacturing with medically approved PEEK-polymer. The integration of a shape memory alloy inside the cage is intended to achieve a good fixation in between the vertebrae that causes better primary stability of the spine as well as less removal of healthy bony structure. The development of an AI-based automated segmentation software for CT- and MRI data to create the virtual model and AI automated CAD software to create the 3D-printable cage take also key position in the project. This will reduce current long availability times down to between 24 and 48 hours.
Already in the beginning of the project experienced neurosurgeons will be integrated to ensure all important implant requirements for the development. Due to the close connection to the institute of Anatomy of the University Leipzig the smart implant can be evaluated at body donors.
Furthermore health insurance companies as well as specialist to fulfil the new Medical Device Regulation MDR will be included.
This project is funded with state support from the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic
