Jan Kočí: AI and digitalization are not sci-fi, but reality of today

8. 10. 2024

AI and digitalisation help to drive growth.

Jan Kočí is a digitalisation and AI expert from the Technical University of Liberec. In his work, he helps companies to introduce the latest technologies into their production processes. Thanks to machine learning, he and his team are automating the setup of lasers and are even aiming for use in space. Kočí is involved in the transformation of Czech industry using artificial intelligence, including working with big players such as ŠKODA AUTO and Trask.

With what problems or requests do companies from the Liberec Region most often contact you?

Businesses often come to us with the need to digitise processes or with requirements for processing and analysing large amounts of data. This is essentially the basis for companies today that want to remain competitive. We provide customized cloud solutions and application development for them. Companies often deal with the integration of different systems or need advanced data security. Artificial intelligence and machine learning also play a big role to help with data analysis and prediction of errors in production. Companies are also interested in how to use augmented reality in industrial practice, for example in employee training or remote support.

Can you give some specific examples of what companies come to you with?

For example, one of our clients was looking for a way to efficiently collect and analyze operational data from their production lines. We created a system that can use this data to detect anomalies and potential problems before they actually occur. Another project involved the development of a cloud-based production management and scheduling application that gives the company better control over the entire process. We also often see requests for IoT solutions to connect different devices and then monitor their status in real time.

What exactly are you working on now?

One of our main projects is LasApp, where we are developing machine learning and artificial intelligence-based algorithms for laser automation and setup. The vision is that this system will be capable of fully autonomous operation, perhaps even in orbit. We are also working on an expert system that uses artificial intelligence for predictive machine maintenance - analysing vibration data and identifying potential faults before they occur. And the third project is focused on internal carsharing - we are developing a system that can optimise the booking and use of company cars so that the vehicles are used as efficiently as possible.

What has your team done well recently and what are you proud of?

Our participation in the LasApp project, which is pushing the boundaries of automation and artificial intelligence, is a great success. I'm also proud to be able to help companies with digitalization within the eDIH project. I'd also like to mention the cooperation with companies such as ŠKODA AUTO, Trask or Liaz Model Factory, which have embarked on the path of digitalization and more efficient management of production processes with our help.

What is and isn't AI?

Jan Kočí regularly lectures about AI and his use-cases.

Who is Jan Kočí?

He is in his 8th year as Head of the Systems Integration research area and leader of the Process Modelling and Artificial Intelligence Department at the Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovations (CXI TUL). He is also a graduate of the Technical University of Liberec, where he studied Automated Control Systems. He worked as Head of IT at Chargeurs, where he was involved in digitalization projects for a multinational textile group. Later, he worked as a project manager for GEDAS, T-Mobile and Trask, where he worked with ŠKODA AUTO, for example. Since 2017, he has been working at the Technical University of Liberec, where he is engaged in research and development in the field of modeling, artificial intelligence and digitalization of production.
