CXI TUL publishes its 2024 CSR report. Showing that sustainability starts from within

The team pushing the boundaries of research also wants to lead in responsibility. The Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovation (CXI) at the Technical University of Liberec has just released its 2024 CSR report. And it's not just a formal document – it's a manifesto of values that are far from common in Czech science.

CSR as part of our scientific DNA

"Corporate social responsibility is not an add-on to our activities – it’s the way we think, work, and make decisions," says CXI director Prof. Miroslav Černík. According to him, sustainability is about balancing research, people, and the environment in which the institute operates.

The report reflects not only the environmental and economic impacts of the institute’s activities but also its internal culture. Ongoing training, flexible work conditions, regular satisfaction surveys, and transparent remuneration are not just buzzwords, but part of daily life at CXI.

What is CXI doing differently?

Employees at the heart of it all:

Internal surveys show a high level of satisfaction — thanks to ergonomic workspaces, an on-site gym, and a culture of openness. Each year, CXI hosts an informal “Beer with the Director” event to openly discuss even serious topics.

Environmental responsibility:

The institute collects used batteries in a 3D-printed “rocket,” minimizes lighting, conserves water, and has developed its own tools for monitoring consumption — including an in-house app for real-time tracking.

Data, research, impact:

In 2024, CXI worked on 93 research projects, including 13 international ones. Over 100 scientific articles were published, and researchers focused on sustainable technologies – from nanomembranes for water purification to AI in the circular economy.

Public engagement:

Thousands of people participated in events like the Night of Scientists, summer schools, and student internships. The institute acts as an open platform, connecting science with people and businesses – from Škoda Auto to scout camps.

"We want to inspire not only science but also business"

CXI openly aims to be a role model beyond academia. "We believe scientific excellence goes hand in hand with humanity, sustainability, and social engagement," summarizes Prof. Černík.

Why it matters

While many research institutions treat CSR as paperwork, CXI TUL shows what true leadership in responsible science looks like. And that a Czech university can publish a report that stands up internationally.
