Projekt:

BIODEGRADABLE GUM WASTE POLYMERIC FILM FOR FOOD PACKAGING APPLICATIONS (3GumPaF)

Období realizace projektu:01.07. 2025 – 31.12. 2028

Řešitel projektu za TUL:prof. Dr. Ing. Miroslav Černík, CSc.

The 3GumPaF (Biodegradable Gum Waste Polymeric Film for Food Packaging Applications) project will develop sustainable bioplastic films from tree gum by-products. Several tree gums, such as guar gum, karaya gum, and gum arabic, are produced in large quantities in India. High-quality gums (grade I) are used in various food, pharmaceutical, and other applications. However, low-quality (grade III) gums, which account for approximately 50% of total production, are often discarded or used in applications where their properties are not fully exploited. They can potentially be used for biodegradable bioplastics for food packaging and other applications, reducing the negative environmental impact and dependence on fossil carbon-based plastics. The joint Euro-Indian project will create bioplastic prototypes combining these natural polymers with sustainable additives, including biodegradable materials such as silk sericin. The properties of the bioplastics can be further modified using nanomaterials to improve the functional properties such as mechanical strength, barrier properties, biodegradability, and stability of stored food while ensuring compliance with circular economy principles. In addition, the project will assess the social and environmental benefits of using by-products in Europe and India, thereby addressing sustainability challenges and promoting an equitable distribution of resources. The project's interdisciplinary approach includes materials science, chemistry, biology, and sustainability assessment. It aims to reach TRL 5 and to develop a roadmap for subsequent technology testing at TRL 7. The project also looks at the possibility of influencing legislation by promoting new materials in the market to ensure the successful development of sustainable plastic alternatives for the packaging and agricultural sectors.
